How to manage Office Politics through #EI -Micro series #3

Here is my micro series #3 about #EmotionalIntelligence #EI how it would create some magics in our life journey! May be interesting since based on true events !

Title: A Secret — Manage Office Politics !

Before Climax : Sam got cornered and had been called by his Head (Sam’s Role-model- His Boss ) that “You are not a Team player and don’t spoil the Team spirit” in front of his Team members . As you guessed correctly , Sam is a nice guy and everyone knew he is a friendly Lead but all were silent but louder with the word “Office Politics”. Sometimes its would ‘hurt’ badly but on the other side , it would help you to know the real face of peer group and how to manage through your #EI.

Scene 1: Office call on 2nd time but Sam, Tech Lead couldn’t pick up the call since driving in jam-packed traffic and heading to hospital for his uncle but he didn’t realize how Office politics going to make an unexpected turn in his career journey.#UnderstandtheSituation

Scene 2: Typical IT Offshore Development center and as usual Team called for 4th consecutive week-end to work . Typical scenes as you visualized , Sam had no ego barriers and like his Boss, he would be so #friendly with the Team but the Manager who somehow got interested on Micro Management and think like he was the only one TRUE to the Management and because of him the Project going on track like in an Augmented reality!

In general a person who has knowledge be it Technical/functional & self-believe always move friendly with peers and Team since no fear whether someone will take their position/importance !

Scene 3:

Sam have a simple belief that everyone has their +/- & focus on plus is a plus and he knew, the Manager was waiting for a time to be play with him since Sam didn’t like the way Team got work for consecutive week-ends & argued (#BeBrave) with Mgr that the estimation was not right since less effort quoted to client. But he ensured his work complete on time (#BeASelfReviewer) since its an independent module and used to leave on time for his loved one and asked his team to leave on time (#BeResponsible). This makes other team love to work with Sam but obvious trigger to other-side .

Office Politics starts when an insecure/in-compete person get compared /questioned /argued by their peer OR one level below in their hierarchy.

Scene 4: Our Micro Mgr made a plan and moved out Sam’s team member to other project since highlighted its priority and made like just Sam alone to work on and listed short deadlines which Sam clearly said couldn’t make (#BeHonest) and this had been nicely flavored and passed to super Boss like Team working late and week-ends but Sam only refused to come on week-end and make others too distract by argued on effort Estimation. But flashback was Sam came one week-end but realized Micro Mgr and Team comes around 11 in the morning, order food at 12.30 and came to seat around 2 pm and max 2–3 hrs work. Could have work on weekdays to complete the work without long meetings and coffee breaks as we know (#BeLogical).

Scene 5: The day comes , when Sam realized Team were not actually happy but working hard for their Super Boss . So Sam texted his Boss saying Team were not happy to work on week-end but the msg misinterpreted (when the tst msg fwded to Micro Mgr) like Super Boss was missed to understand the team’s pulse since he actually care for his team(#TRUST) .Which trigger that painful question in front of all and asked one by one “Are you not happy and concern any to work on week-end “ except Sam all were said All Good since they dont want to make Super Boss feel bad! Since Sam got married recently, all factors triggered a decision on Sam “You are not a Team player and don’t spoil the Team spirit!”

In general Individually all are good and believe that always “I’m correct” but don’t have time to think/listen from other-side what context “I” may be wrong!

Climax : On the same time of internal escalation, Sam got an appreciation mail from client for his unique work .But Sam and his respectful Super Boss (#EI) decided its good to move to new project in different branch and Sam agreed but made himself promised will be a People Leader first and got into new team , worked hard , Innovate-self , moved friendly with new team since he knew the #pain, empowered the Team and got continuous 5 time Outstanding rating (O2 club) and led 50+ member team but the seed was the moment when he was cornered and told “He was not a Team player” , Though it was a painful moment, but he observed his emotions and Super Boss position (to get the project delivered on committed time ) so re-directed himself when he understand the actual root cause was Gossip & missing TRUST .

Moral-Secret to avoid Office Politics : Never just pass whatever you heard from others if its not good about them and just listen, think from other side, smile and focus on your actual goal to improve self and your Team.
